Baseball for a Classic Golf Swing Technique

Develop Your Classic Golf Swing Technique with a Simple Batter’s Box Concept
I was in Dick’s Sporting Goods Store yesterday picking up some tees and baseball bat tape. As I left the store, I was thinking about how confusing the classic golf swing can become for the golfer compare to the baseball swing. Here we have been playing this game of golf before Columbus sailed for the New World, and the golf swing still remains an enigma.
David Leadbetter wrote an article in the January 2002 Golf Digest issue on page 54, and discussed a unique golf swing technique. David Leadbetter, in this article entitled Eliminate Your Takeaway Mistakes with the Swing of the Future, was comparing the baseball vs. golf swing. What I like about the Swing of the Future concept by applying the baseball swing to the golf swing is how instinctive the baseball swing is to the batter standing in the batter’s box.
One advantage of the baseball vs. the golf swing could be that most kids learn their mechanics of the baseball swing at a young age, usually around eight. Dads, moms, uncles, aunts, brothers, or sisters started tossing balls to kids even younger than eight. As I was hitting golf balls in my yard, my neighbors was tossing baseballs to their four-year-old grandson. I can remember my grandfather starting me off by hitting baseballs off a traffic cone in the backyard.
When the batter stands in the batter’s box, they don’t think about their swing sequence, swing mechanics, or even have swing thoughts. Another advantage that the batter has is that they are proactive, and aren’t just standing in the batter’s box with a static frame of mind or body. The baseball batter is in consistent motion, while developing their natural tempo and rhythm to help synchronize their body and bat. Their main focus is on picking up the movement and location of an 80-plus mile per hour fastball?
David Leadbetter’s Swing of the Future: The Preset Golf Swing Technique
The question that David Leadbetter proposed in the first paragraph was, What if we just eliminated the early part of the swing? The Classic golf swing doesn’t have to be static, giving the golfer time to think and develop what I call mental fog, especially on the first tee box where most golfers experience a whiteout.
David Leadbetter’s Swing of the Future has the golfer in the proactive position, like the baseball batter, where the golfer presets the first phase of their golf swing sequence. The golfer’s left arm and left forearm in David Leadbetter’s golf swing technique is parallel with the ground. In The ESPY Golf Swing Sequence, I have the golfer’s shaft parallel with the ground, which is a technique that Sir Nick Faldo demonstrated in a YouTube Video referred to as the Preset Golf Swing Sequence.
Nick Faldo demonstration of the preset component in his YouTube Video presets his wrists to place the shaft of the club parallel with the ground and also the target line. The only thing remaining to complete in the ESPY Preset Golf Swing Technique is to take the club to the top of the swing by just turning the left shoulder under the chin. This can be performed by turning the left pectoral muscle toward the ball. The best golf swing technique is where the golf club, hands, wrists, forearms, arms, shoulders, and torso are synced, coiling the lower body, as David referred to as synchronizing the parts.
As noted in Nick Faldo’s video, presetting the golf swing sequence automatically sets the correct swing plane for each club in your bag. The correct swing plane is predetermined by the length and angle of each shaft and how the golfer’s wrists are preset, in what I refer to as the Lock Position. The Lock Position in the ESPY Golf Swing technique indicates that 80 percent of the golf swing sequence is completed.
The biggest advantage that Nick Faldo’s video and the ESPY Golf Swing Sequence has over the Classic Golf Swing Technique is that the Sync/Preset technique establishes the golf swing without swing thoughts. It allows the golfer to focus their conscious mind on either the ball or the target and get the conscious mind out of the way of the subconscious mind.
The ESPY Golf Swing Sequence and Technique
The ESPY Golf Swing technique provides the golfer with the same advantages that the batter has in the batter’s box, which is NOT HAVING to THINK. Instead of the golfer being static or passive, they can be proactive and take the nerves and conscious mind out of the golf equation.
The E in ESPY Golf Swing represent Ergonomics on how to properly synchronize the movement of the body for maximum results. Three movements, using the forearms and wrists, represent 80 percent of the golf swing mechanics. This is the golfer’s turbocharger that causes the golf ball to spring off the clubface, with little effort, with perfect trajectory. This also creates that solid sound and feel that the golfer experiences. These three movement are Supination (Sync), Pronation (Preset), and Radial Deviation (Rack or cock) elements shown below.
The Rack or cock element helps the golfer to establish the Lock Position to set the proper swing plane with each club in their bag. The cock element that creates acceleration component for loft and backspin. The objective of the ESPY Golf Swing technique is to take thinking out of the golfer’s process and performance. Paraphrasing the song by The Byrds from Ecclesiastes Turn, Turn, Turn– There is a time to think and a time to do! Below is the ESPY Golf Swing sequence reference to the right-handed golfer.
The S in ESPY is the Sync, or supination element. This is where the golfer needs to exchange their golf glove for a pair of kickboxing gloves. The kickboxing gloves help to distinguish the lower forearm from the wrist. The wrist is not where the golfer would wear their wristwatch, for this is the lower forearm, or the wristbands on the kickboxing gloves.
The kickboxing gloves are probably one of the best training aids that the golfer could use. Look at the back of the right hand, and there’s a nodule located above the pinky knuckle in the lower forearm noted below. This nodule is called the right Ulnar Styloid Process, or USP.
The Sync element supinates and syncs the right USP with the right ring knuckle. This is the key move that was demonstrated in Nick Faldo’s video preset golf swing technique. This places the hands over the golfer’s right pocket, which is a great checkpoint. This Sync element naturally Presets or pronates the left wrist, that is the P in the ESPY golf swing sequence. The preset golf swing technique also racks, or cocks, the golfer’s wrists in the Lock position.
The Lock Position also allows the right elbow to sync with the golfer’s shoulders to allow the golfer to take advantage of the body’s natural golf swing mechanics. This was the same golf swing technique that Mr. Arnold Palmer gave to President Eisenhower before a Pro-Am, by keeping his right elbow next to his right side.
Like in David Leadbetter’s golf swing technique of the future, the only element left to perform is to take the handle of the golf club to the top in the takeaway swing. This is the Y, or the Yaw element in the ESPY golf swing sequence. Yaw is an aviation term describing a horizontal rotation about a vertical axis, or in the case of the golf swing the shoulders about the spinal axis.
This is performed by turning the left pectoral muscle a quarter of a turn toward the ball. Then take handle of the club to the top of the golf swing for a full turn. There’s not a better term to describe how the golfer wants to coil their shoulders, torso, and lower body about their spinal axis than the Yaw maneuver.
Verifying the ESPY Golf Swing Technique off the Deck
If the golfer follows the ESPY Golf Swing technique and sequence, the golfer will make better and crisper golf shots, including the challenging pitch and chip shots. If the golfer wants to verify that they are performing the ESPY Golf Swing sequence correctly, the golfer can take a driver and hit either an Almost Golf Ball or an actual golf ball off the deck, or ground. I perform this in my golf swing workout.
If you hit a slight draw with a driver off the deck, the golfer knows they have performed the ESPY Golf Swing sequence correctly. Remember the Yaw element is initiated by using the pectoral muscle for a quarter of a turn toward the ball, before taking the handle of the club to the top of the takeaway swing.

Sir Nick Faldo demonstration of the Preset Golf Swing Technique
One of Sir Nick Faldo’s first golf swing fundamentals that he learned was demonstrated in this YouTube video entitled The Preset golf swing technique. Nick Faldo discussed the WHAT, but didn’t explained the HOW in his YouTube video.
The Sync/Preset Elements in The ESPY Golf Swing Coach explains how to setup the classic golf swing maneuver to place the wrists into the key Lock Position. This was the same golf swing technique used by David Duval during an interview with Charlie Rymer on Golf Channel. These two Videos are probably two of the best Videos to discuss the wrist action in the golf swing.
